With each generation, the governance of the family business entity becomes increasingly complex. Differing perspectives among shareholders at sibling or cousin levels can negatively impact the success of the business, the preservation of hard-earned wealth, and the strength of the family unity.
Formalizing the governance process with an effective agreement is essential for the preservation of both the wealth and the family relationships, yet many families struggle to find an agreement that meets the needs of all shareholders. Many privately-owned businesses do not have a formal agreement in place. Among those that did start the process, a huge number were never signed.
Jeff will outline the steps to getting everyone on the same page and getting an agreement that everyone will sign! Participants will be introduced to the key components of a shareholder agreement and explore ways to clarify their principles and philosophies to use as the basis for a more positive outcome.
